Wills & Probate | 5 Key Points By Dementia Friends

Updated: Jul 31, 2023

Since becoming a Dementia Friend, I have read many stories about those either living with dementia or know someone who is living with dementia.

Upon reading about Dementia Friends, I learned that there are 5 key, and important, messages, that Dementia Friends are spreading, which are:

1. Dementia is not a natural part of ageing;

2. There is more to a person than dementia;

3. Dementia is caused by diseases of the brain;

4. Dementia is not just about losing your memory;

5. It is possible to live with dementia

It is so important that we continue to spread awareness about dementia and the above key messages surrounding dementia.

There are many people, including myself, that have so much to learn about dementia and by having more knowledge, we can all help tackle the fear and misunderstanding of dementia, which sadly means many of those suffering with dementia face loneliness and social exclusion.

Dementia is caused by a number of diseases that affect the brain. The most common is Alzheimer's, but this is not the only one.

The different types of dementia affect the brain at different rates and in different ways and of course, people will experience dementia differently.

As many of us are aware, the symptoms of dementia include memory loss, difficulties with thinking, problem solving and language. But these are not the only issues that those with dementia suffer with.

Let's look at what we can do to support families to ensure that they do not end up in these situations.

It is so important for those that have dementia to make sure that their affairs are in order, as there can be a fine line as to when the documents can be prepared and signed. Once the documents are in order, the person and their family can focus on enjoying their lives together without the worry and stress of the things that can go wrong without having the documents in place.
