This September, Remember A Charity Week invites us all to take a moment and reflect on how we can make a lasting difference by leaving a gift to charity in our Will, after taking care of family and friends.
It is a simple yet powerful act of generosity that helps charities continue their vital work, long into the future. To help you better understand what it means to leave a legacy, we have answered some of the most commonly asked questions below.
1. Why should I make a Will?
Making a Will ensures that your estate is distributed according to your wishes, rather than by default legal rules (known as intestacy). It gives you peace of mind, knowing that your loved ones and the causes you care about are provided for.
2. What is a charitable gift in a Will?
A charitable gift, or legacy, is a donation made to a charity through your Will. It can be a set amount of money, a specific item, or a percentage of your estate, after other gifts and expenses have been settled.
3. Can I still leave something to my family and friends if I include a charity?
Absolutely.
You can leave a small percentage or a fixed amount to charity after your loved ones have been looked after. Even just 1% of your estate can make a meaningful difference to the charity you choose, while 99% still goes to your beneficiaries.
4. Do I need to be wealthy to leave a gift to charity?
Not at all.
Every gift, no matter how large or small, plays an important role. Many charities rely on legacy gifts to fund long-term projects and essential services.
5. Is it difficult to include a charity in my Will?
No, it is simple. It is the perfect time to make or update your Will. We are here to help you navigate the process clearly and confidently, and this September, we are offering support to make it even easier.
6. How do I choose which charity to support?
Think about the causes closest to your heart, perhaps a charity that has supported you or your loved ones, or a mission that reflects your values, whether it is health, education, conservation, community support, or animal welfare.
7. Is leaving a gift to charity tax-efficient?
Yes.
Gifts to UK-registered charities are exempt from Inheritance Tax. In some cases, leaving 10% or more of your estate to charity could reduce the overall tax rate on the rest of your estate. It is important to take personalised legal advice to ensure this works for your specific situation.
8. Are you offering anything special during Remember A Charity Week?
Yes.
Throughout September, we’re offering free Will review calls for anyone with an existing Will, as well as discounted rates for those looking to prepare or update their Will.
It is a great opportunity to check that your plans still reflect your wishes, and to explore the difference a charitable legacy could make.
